A weekend of Hockey and Cake!

What a weekend of Hockey, Saturday saw the club supporting each other in all the home games, whilst wearing their lovely new hats and eating cake and Sunday was time for all Newcastle Nana’s to get over excited about Hockey for the more mature ladies. After spending months of wearing our Purple Finals Hoodies, since that glorious day in April, it was time to find the original Masters hoodie and meet in the changing rooms for the 2018/19 cup run. We were certainly much calmer in the changing rooms, perhaps due to our new accountants Rose and Hannah – they know who hasn’t paid, so make sure you both pay soon!

On strict timings Kev finished his team talk and for the 1st time ever the Nana’s had all been to the loo for the 2nd time since entering the changing room and were on the pitch with 20 minutes to spare!

With the game under way it was clear that it was going to be end to end hockey to entertain the growing crowd of supporters. In the first 10 minutes Newcastle created some good opportunities, but we didn’t allow for the fact that players have aged and some of our passes were a little ambitious. Zoe was still in cricket mode and whilst attempting to score a six, hit the ball directly into Hannah’s face, not that she complained! We welcomed Jude and Anna to the squad this year, Jude made some great runs down the sides of the pitch and it was great to see that Anna still likes to throw herself onto the floor – great effort young ladies and welcome to the Nanas. Both teams had their chances in the first half but due to wise heads in defence the score at half time was 0 – 0

With some nice good old-fashioned half-time Oranges and wise words from the wise ones we were ready for the 2nd half. Bazi fresh form 2 hours sleep decided to use the simple tactic of get the ball run into the circle the hit the ball towards goal – GOAL!!! Well done Bazi, but credit must also go to Sarah R and the forward for their running off the ball to create the room. It wasn’t long before Bazi found herself with the ball again in the bottom corner. Next Bazi tactic keep ball, with 30minutes to go both Morpeth and Newcastle players kindly informed Bazi that playing keep ball form 30minutes in the bottom corner would be very boring! Morpeth’s defence were difficult to break down so Helen decided to go on a little run with the ball, this turned into a longer run and finally a shot at goal. 2 – nil. We continued to play some good hockey, finding Nikki and Jude out wide and Fran and Sue making good runs into the corners. Kathryn was holding the ball up well in attack and since Bobi’s knock to the head in the Final the ball is just always stuck to her stick as she makes her skilful runs.

Morpeth were not going to give up and this is where Zoe had to find another gear to keep up with their speedy forward – yes Zoe we all saw you keep up with her. Emma on the other side of defence was having a great game, making some lovely tackles and playing some fab passes to the midfield. Amy in goal made some theatrical saves throughout the games and despite Morpeth diving to get the ball in the back of the net our defence stayed strong. Perhaps all players are after ‘The Banana’ last seen been used by a small child to hit our well-dressed supporter Ralph!

With 4 minutes to go there was Drama, a Morpeth PC, the crowd were going wild, could Morpeth score? In their first attempt Bazi decided to test out the face mask by playing the ball off her own stick onto her mask! Another PC, 1st Hodgson broke the line early, walk of shame to the half way line, next Wilson broke early, she was so embarrassed that she left her mask on. This leaving Amy, Emma and Bazi – never fear Bazi cleared the ball out – final score Newcaslte 2 Morpeth 0. A lovely game of hockey, played in true Nana style, some great hockey, many passes that in our youth would have been amazing and several stick tackles just because we’re a little slower than we once were.

It appears that many have heard about our teas and the room was full with, players, family and supporters. For the first time ever there was nothing left over! Man of the Match goes to us all, I mean how hard can it be to put 3 numbers down! Thanks to all for game and support!
